This month’s Boston Post Mortem is Tuesday, July 12th at Monroe in Cambridge and will begin at 7:00pm; talk begins at 8:00pm.
Our presentation this month is:
“Through the Portal and Back: Designing VR Experiences for Public Spaces”.
Mike Mandel, Jeff Hesser, and Dare Matheson form a group named Secret Portal and will share their discoveries in working with room-scale VR in a museum setting. VR experiences designed for public spaces, such as museums or art galleries, present exciting new outlets for artists and creators. With room-scale VR more widely accessible, developers can further blur the line between physical and virtual environments by designing both spaces together.
In this talk, lessons learned from presenting Across the Divide and Between Lands at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston will be shared. Both of these installations encouraged participants to communicate between virtual and physical realities. The challenges of creating an experience that is engaging for both active participants and members of the audience will be discussed.
Our presentation is as follows:
Jeff Hesser, Artist at Harmonix
Dare Matheson, Lead Artist at Harmonix
Michael Mandel, Software Engineer at Harmonix
About the presentation:
Jeff Hesser is a co-founder of Secret Portal and an artist at Harmonix. He has also taught at schools that include the Rhode Island School of Design and the New York Academy of Art.
Dare Matheson is a visual artist with over 15 years experience in interactive media and game development. He has a background in experimental animation, and his independent film The Bible won top prize in the 1996 international Black Maria film festival.
Michael Mandel is a game programmer and designer in the Boston area with over 12 years of experience at places like EA, Apple, and Harmonix. He specializes in rapid prototyping and emerging technologies, most recently serving as code lead on the trippy music visualizer, Harmonix Music VR. He’s also the co-founder of Secret Portal, a collective of tinkerers who are exploring social room-scale virtual reality for public spaces.
