Manager, Release Engineering

Turbine, Inc. seeks a Manager, Release Engineering for the Turbine Release Engineering department. The Manager of Release Engineering will be responsible for leading a team of release engineers to design and maintain processes and systems to efficiently manage the release of code and products for Turbine and Warner Bros. This position will be responsible for the technical aspects of building/compiling of source code into final products/systems as well as revision control. The Manager of Release Engineering also needs to be a domain expert on Software Configuration Management. This position will have the opportunity of working closely with core technology teams, operations teams, and game development across Turbine and multiple Warner Bros. studios.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manages the daily activities of a team of release engineers.
• Plans, designs, and creates a platform system for compiling, building, configuring, and deploying shared technology systems.
• Determines requirements and complete project technical risk analysis.
• Adheres to industry best practices and specific internal procedures and standards.
• Leads a growing release engineering team supporting multiple projects and teams.
• Manages the existing build system, source code management system and related tools.
• Seeks out opportunities to identify and deal with issues in systems developed and maintained by the team.
• Conducts code reviews of engineers on the team.
• Delivers regular one-on-one meetings with employees and writes employee reviews.
• Develops metrics to measure RE effectiveness and efficiency.
• Collaborates with software engineering teams on a technology roadmap. Especially in the areas of release engineering, release management, and configuration management.
• Employs best practices in the design of efficient release engineering and release management processes.
• Evaluates third-party tools and products and identifies the best solutions for WB’s needs.
• Continually automate all aspects of builds and build management.
• Manages the personnel issues including managing stress level and morale of the team.
• Develops and set standards for Release Management.
• Consults and Advises development teams on branch and code maintenance strategies.
• Stays current on available tools and best practices in release engineering.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degrees (or above) in CS, Engineering, or a reasonable equivalent thereof.
• Minimum 10 years of professional experience in release engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of professional software programming/engineering skills.
• Minimum 5 years experience building and releasing medium to large-scale, highly-scalable, highly-available software applications.
• Minimum 5 years of technical leadership experience in release management.
• 3+ years of departmental/personnel management experience preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
• Demonstrated success managing a release engineering team in a globally distributed engineering organization.
• Strong technical skills relevant to release engineering.
• Experience with popular CI, SCM, and Build Management systems and tools.
• Prior experience working in a Scrum environment a plus.
• Knowledge of and passion for multiplayer online games.
• Maintain an exceptional knowledge of the appropriate programming languages and a fundamental grasp of the technical architecture of their project and domain.
